Situated in the far north of New Zealand, the Bay of Islands has been long been recognised as a top tourism destination around the world, and it’s easy to see why. With it’s own subtropical micro-climate the region is renowned for its beauty and history, and has plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. The Bay of Islands has all the benefits you can get from a destination wedding, but instead it’s right on your doorstep here in NZ. Still not convinced? No problem. We’ve collated our top five reasons why we think you should choose the Bay of Islands as your wedding destination to help sway you around.
(1) Breathtaking Scenery
The Bay of Islands consists of 144 unspoilt islands between Cape Brett and the Purerua Peninsula, and includes the picturesque towns of Russell, Paihia, Opua and Kerikeri. With everything centred around the water you’re never far from a jaw-dropping view. Reserves, beaches, and forests are untouched and unpopulated, adding to the beauty of it all. As an area rich in history the towns themselves are also known for their colonial gems with buildings dating back to the 1800’s – some of the first to be built in the country. At Baylys’ Farm we’re lucky to be at the centre of it all, so beautiful views are guaranteed!
(2) Activities Galore
Boredom is basically impossible in the Bay of Islands. Activities in the area have been designed to cater for the thrill-seekers to the chill-seekers, so you and your guests will be able to be entertained before and after the big day. See the islands from the sky with Salt Air, or for the more daring Parasail Bay of Islands is an awesome option. If you prefer to keep two feet on the ground then there are plenty of beautiful walks within the area, as well as golf courses – the Waitangi Golf Club is conveniently right next door to Baylys’ Farm! For the adventurous type there are plenty of diving and fishing charters to help you get the perfect catch, or you could take to the water by kayak or paddleboard. Tours by local boat operators Fullers and Explore also provide a great way to explore the islands and learn about the regions history. The recently completed Waitangi Mountain Bike Park is another a great way to burn off the night before, although more relaxed options include visiting local vineyards or a local spa.
(3) Accommodation Options
As a popular tourist spot and holiday destination for New Zealanders the Bay of Islands has plenty of accommodation options for you and your guests to choose from. Paihia, which is a 10-minute drive from Baylys’ Farm, is the accommodation hub for the area. Here you will find campsites, hotels, motels, resorts, bed and breakfast’s, as well as plenty of AirBnB’s and baches which can be rented out. The huge range of options also means there is a variety of price points, so everyone can be comfortably catered for. If you get in touch with larger businesses early enough they may also be able to arrange a deal for your guests.
(4) A Holiday Close to Home
It takes 3.5 hours by car or 50-minutes by plane to get to the Bay of Islands from Auckland, so it is close enough to drive in one day but also far enough away that it feels like you’re going somewhere exciting and different. This allows your guests to be far from the everyday stresses at home, switch off and really enjoy the event. Guests are able to make a weekend of it and treat themselves to a mini-holiday, potentially exploring an area they haven’t been to before. You could also start your honeymoon early and take the days after the event to enjoy the area as a newly wedded couple!
(5) The Climate
For the most part the weather in the Bay of Islands is dry and warm – they don’t call it the ‘winterless north’ for nothing! The region is dominated by a subtropical climate created by the flow of warm water from the South Pacific. Summer days are long and the temperatures average around 23 – 27*C, generally making great conditions for hosting a wedding.
